The famous Bollywood photographer Dabboo Ratnani’s annual 2010 calendar is out. This is the 11th year where he has captured all the top celebrities for his trademark calendar. The calendar this year will have a black-and-white theme.
Deepika Padukone’s picture looks like she is not wearing anything, since all the body parts you see are bare. Dabboo Ratnani says, “I wanted to make her look sensual, but aesthetic. Last year, I shot her in a sari, so this is in total contrast. She strikes a thinking, dreamy pose, and I have used lighting to match her mood. Normally Bollywood is associated with bright colors. Black and white images are of the bygone eras but I opted for a stark B&W mood in the snapshots is dark but the styling modem.”
Every year, Dabboo starts his preparations in October. Although, he has many interactions with the celebrities for their shots for magazines, movies and portfolios, every year all of them take time out for the calendar. Ratnani says, “The shoot provides the stars a platform to experiment with their looks and styling.” The 2010 calendar includes celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Kajol, Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, John Abraham, Sonam Kapoor and Kangna Ranaut.
The celebrities who are making their first appearance in this calendar are Asin, Farhan Akhtar, Genelia D’Souza and Imran Khan. Dabboo does not want to comment on which star is looking the best. He says, “They are all my friends and go out of their way to cooperate. For me they all look hot.” Dabboo Ratnani is not interested in selling his calendar in the market, it is exclusively made for the Bollywood celebrities.
Hrithik Roshan who had speech problems, recently uttered a five-and-a-half minute monologue in one take for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish and received a ‘You are in Bachchan’s league’ compliment from the director.
It’s not easy to please the demanding Sanjay Leela Bhansali. To make the scene easier for Hrithik, he had cut the dialogue in three parts. After two minutes when he was about to say cut, Hrithik continued to deliver his dialogue and finished the whole monologue in one shot, to the astonishment of everyone.
The monologue was Hrithik remembering his last love before being ill fated to be wheel chair bound. As the shot ended, Bhansali walked to Hrithik and said, ‘What can I say?’ making Hrithik think if he had messed up it. Then he received a great compliment that any actor hopes to get. Bhansali said to him, ‘you are in Bachchan’s league.’
We often hear about legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan’s talent and with every other film he improves his scale, which one could only imagine to chase. This time Amitji set one more milestone for his followers as he sang in voice of a 12-year-old for Balki’s Paa without help of any technology.
Music composer Aadesh Shrivastava who recorded the song said, “I thought I would initially record the song in Amitji’s normal voice and later use technological enhancement and modify it to make it sound like a child’s. However, Amitji was firm that I wouldn’t have to do anything of that sort and that he will sing in a child’s voice without any help. He went on to do just that.”
It is actually a tune by Ilaiyaraaja that Aadesh ensemble with Amitabh’s voice. Dealing with such a difficult task, Aadesh later added, “It is originally a tune created by Raja sir (Ilaiyaraaja). Normally, I’d never even dream of touching his tunes but I have worked as a drummer for him on Sadma (1983) and he sent this song from Chennai for Amitji to sing it in Mumbai.”
The music director later promises that the song will be instant hit with children as soon as it releases. “Amitabh does not sound like a grown-up man imitating a child. Don’t ask me how he has managed to do it. I just sat there stunned,” says Aadesh.
Amitji, singing the song so effortlessly put everyone at the studio stunned. Meanwhile this is what one can expect from a persona like him.
Bollywood biggie Mr. Amitabh Bachchan will turn 67 tomorrow. Mr. Bachchan will also complete 40 years in the film industry. On this occasion, some personalities from the film industry are busy preparing a tribute to him. Producers of his forthcoming film Rann, Sheetal Talwar and Madhu Mantena decided to make his birthday special so they have arranged a special event at 7 pm on the eve of his birthday. There will be forty actors sporting Big B’s memorable characters and mouthing famous dialogues from his film. Mr. Bachchan is invited for the event; meanwhile he doesn’t know that it is tribute to him. Instead he believes that it is something for the promotional event for the film Rann.
All the forty actors who are also fans of Mr. Bachchan are all excited to perform in front of him. Mr. Bachchan’s characters from films like Zanjeer, Sholay, Deewar, and Black are part of the tribute. However it will conclude with his political character from Sarkar.
Confirming it, co-producer Talwar said, “Mr. Bachchan’s 40-year-old journey in Hindi cinema is exceptional in every sense. He started his career with Saat Hindustani in 1969 and that’s where our staged homage begins.”
So bringing together 40 people must be tedious task? “It wasn’t difficult at all. All we did is spread the word about us planning a clones’ tribute to the superstar for his birthday. We were flooded with requests from dozens of artistes who wanted to play the characters in front of Mr. Bachchan. We sifted through the legion of applicants to shortlist the ones who fitted the bill,” said Talwar.
“Mr. Bachchan thinks we’re inviting him to an event related to Rann. He doesn’t know about the homage yet,” adds Sheetal.
We hope Mr. Bachchan will really enjoy it.
Seems like the new trend in the fashion world is to rope in Bollywood stars as showstoppers. Now it’s a turn of Big B Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu. Reports say that both the actor will be showstoppers for designers Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla at the forthcoming fashion week. Big B will walk the ramp on 11 October, which is also his birthday. Tabu and Amitabh will be seen together once again after Cheeni Kum.
When asked to Mr. Bachchan, he confirmed it and said, “Yes, I’m walking the ramp for Abu-Sandeep.”
Meanwhile, Sandeep from the designer duo said, “Mr Bachchan has been wearing our clothes for a long time now and we wanted someone who knows our clothes well. And of course, it never gets bigger than Amitabh Bachchan. Besides Mr Bachchan, Tabu is someone who has been wearing our clothes for long too. We were keen to have both of them together on our show after Cheeni Kum.”
Was it difficult to bring them together once again? “Not at all,” added Sandeep. “Both Amitabh and Tabu immediately agreed.”
Film Paa originated on the sets of Cheeni Kum, when director Balki inspired by an interesting conversation between the Bachchan father-son duo. The unusual thing about the film is that it casts Amitabh as Abhishek’s son in the film.
The real life father-son duo plays the exact opposite characters in Balki’s forthcoming film Paa. The idea came to the director’s mind when he listened to the real life conversation between Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan.
Talking about the unconventional script, Balki said, “One day during the shooting of Cheeni Kum, when I was discussing scenes with Amitji, Abhishek walked in. That’s when I saw Abhishek, who’s known as the brat, having a serious conversation with his father. In fact, at that moment, he came across as the more mature of the two. And I thought why not explore their relationship in that light? That’s how the role reversal happened.”
At the time the director was not aware about progeria, which is a congenital abnormality which shows premature and rapid aging of a person.
“I only knew a son of a friend whose hormones were developing faster than normal. That friend put me on to a doctor who deals with child-growth issues. He told me about progeria,” said the director.
This little information made the director to use as basis for his movie and so he began his research in that way. Balki said, “I found out about this family in Kolkata where four of the children suffered from progeria. I then contacted the Progeria Research Foundation, who provided a lot of matter. It happens in one out of eight million cases. But finally I decided not to do a fully authentic representation of the ailment. We’ve resorted to a lot of artistic licence.”
Amitabh who is playing the role of the victim of rapid-aging disease in the film has shown as tall as he is in real life, which is not a real case with the progeria patients.
Balki explained, “Normally, a progeria patient can’t be that tall. So Paa is not a hundred per cent authentic representation of the disease. It’s more an emotional father-son story with the ailment as a backdrop. I haven’t gone into details of the disease.”
It’s now official that, it’s not Abhishek Bachchan but Hrithik Roshan to play Amitabh Bachchan’s historic role of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan in the remake of Agneepath. Amitabh Bachchan is such an iconic figure, that any young actor would bid to play his role.
Hrithik was so keen to play Big B’s role that he put aside his previous commitment that is of Vishal Bharadwaj’s next film. His schedule was fixed that after Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish, he will go for Vishal Bharadwaj’s film. But now he will first go for the remake of Agneepath. However Vishal will wait for him. Till he completes the remake, Vishal will go for some other subject with some other actor.
A source said, “Vishal had already spoken to Hrithik about his next film but as Hrithik will first do Agneepath, the filmmaker too decided to go ahead with another subject that he had in mind with a different actor. Vishal is willing to wait for Hrithik to star in the film they had earlier discussed as he is keen to work on that particular subject only with Hrithik. Hrithik too had loved Vishal’s script which is why they had agreed in principle to work together. Hrithik will start Vishal’s film but at a later stage.”
Karan Johar will produce the film, while Karan Malhotra who has been associated with Karan Johar for a long time will direct the film.
Director-producer Karan Johar plans to remake 90’s blockbuster Agneepath. For the lead role of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, Karan has approached Hrithik Roshan. In the original film the role was played by Amitabh Bachchan. Karan is also making Hindi remake of Hollywood hit film Stepmom, for which he had to pay high amount to buy its rights. But for the remake of Agneepath he doesn’t need to buy the rights as it was made by his home production. The original film was produced by his late father Yash Johar and directed by Mukul Anand starring Amitabh Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty and Danny Denzongpa.
One source revealed, “Karan has been planning to remake Agneepath but he was waiting for the right time. Now, he is confident that his company, Dharma Productions, can make multiple films at the same time. The film will be directed by Karan Malhotra, who Karan thinks is one of his most promising assistants. While some changes will be made in the script to give it a contemporary feel, Karan does not want to change any dialogue as he is very confident of the dialogue in the original Agneepath.”
“Surprisingly, Karan has not approached Abhishek Bachchan to play Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, which was played by the actor’s father in the original. While Hrithik is still deciding if he wants to star in the remake, Karan is sure that Hrithik is the perfect choice. However, the Dharma Productions team is yet to decide on the actors who will play Krishnan Iyer MA, played by Mithun Chakraborty, and Kancha Cheena, played by Danny Denzongpa, in the original,” the source added later.
However Hrithik’s business manager, Ashok Vashodia said, “Karan and Hrithik are extremely close. They keep discussing various projects. However, I am unaware of any offer as far as Agneepath is concerned.”
As Abhishek Bachchan is at Cannes accompanying wife Aishwarya Rai, seems like have impressed the filmmakers out there and receiving film offers. Manuel de la Roche, the Paris based producer wants to cast father-son Bollywood duo Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan for his next film.
French director Jan Kounen will direct the film, which is named as The Secret History of the Dalai Lamas. The director will soon approach the Bachchans with the acting offers for the film in lead roles.
Roche said, “The film will trace the history of the Dalai Lamas all the way from 14th century. It will blend dramatized re-enactments involving the earlier incarnations with excerpts from an interviews with the current Dalai Lama.”
Other than these Bollywood actors, the film will also cast Hollywood biggies Sharon Stone and Richard Gere.
“We are very keen to cast the father and son duo in key roles in the film. Sharon Stone (who is a practicing Tibetan Buddhist) will step in as the narrator, while Hollywood star Richard Gere will also be involved with the project,” added the producer.
Shooting for the film start later this year and will be shot mainly in Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh and some other parts of Indian subcontinent. It will be ready to hit theaters in the second half of 2010.
The father son duo had earlier worked together for films Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and Sarkar Raj. However will soon appear together in R. Balakrishnan’s Pa.
Actor Amitabh Bachchan is all charged up now a day only because one Parisian ballet troupe is interested to adapt some of the poems of his late father, Harivanshrai Bachchan. Harivanshrai Bachchan will be the first Indian poet whose poems will be enchanted at the ballet.
“We need to sift through my father’s voluminous works and choose those poems whose images render them fluently to the ballet,” said Mr. Amitabh Bachchan.
He later added, “The whole process of selecting those poems of my father which have the maximum universal resonance and are suitable to be enacted in the ballet form, is wonderfully exciting.”
Soon the ballet will be performed on Harivanshrai Bachchan’s poems showcasing the India’s literary culture. Amitji feels it like a dream come true and is all excited about it.
