Director Joe Wright, who earlier made films like Pride and Prejudice and Atonement is planning to make a film on British historian Alex von Tunzelmann’s Indian Summer: The Secret History of the End of an Empire. But he has to wait till he gets a nod from Indian government. As the name of the book suggests, the film will depict withdrawal of British Empire from India in 1947. It will capture the events of Lord Mountbatten and his wife Edwina’s visit to India in 1947 to supervise the handover to Jawaharlal Nehru.

According to reports Cate Blanchett will play the role of Edwina. Also, British hunk Hugh Grant is supposed to play the Mountbatten. However, who will play Nehru as well as the other cast is not yet decided.

But the director has to wait for the shooting till he gets green signal from Indian government. And even if he gets nod, much depend on him that how he is going to depict the characters of Gandhi and Jinnah as well as close association of Nehru and Edwina. Although the author has delicately handled Nehru and Edwina’s relationship, he didn’t favorably portrayed Gandhi or Churchill. As India is always sensitive about its heroes and icons, the film may come up with some controversial issues. William Nicholson who had written script of Gladiator is writing the screenplay for Indian Summer.

If the director gets permission, shooting for the film will start in first half of 2010.
