Ashutosh Gowarikar

After directing the historical characters in Jodha-Akbar, director Ashutosh Gowarikar is set to direct an ancient character of Lord Buddha. The film is also supposed to be a big budget film costing about Rs. 200 crore. Industrialist BK Modi will produce the film.

It’s an English film and will be named as Buddha. Modi was previously planning to make the film with Shekhar Kapur and Deepak Chopra. But it didn’t work because of the differences in opinions of the trio. However, it seems like Modi don’t want to give up with the project and so approached Gowarikar. Interestingly Gowarikar has earlier portrayed the character for TV serial Discovery of India directed by Shyam Benegal.

There is also a buzz that Benegal also wants to make a film based on Lord Buddha life with Hrithik Roshan in Lead. On the other hand, Gowarikar has not yet finalized the actor who will depict the character. Oscar winner writer David Ward has written script for the film. Gowarikar is about to complete his What’s Your Rashee? and will soon finalize the actors, location and technicians for Buddha. The film will go on floor in May next year and will be shot in the foothills of Himalayas.
